Khmer culture used to play a dominant role in the Mekong Delta before the 12th century. They were agricultural residents, with fairly complete rice cultivation techniques. Khmer people also fished, weaved, made mats, made palm sugar and made pottery. In the past, Khmer men and women wore silk sarongs on normal days. Khmer women's ceremonial costumes included a Tam Vong shirt, a Sampot skirt, and a cross-body scarf. The special features of Khmer costumes are the colorful patterns and the use of beads and sparkling sequins. Khmer men wore short shirts with stiff collars, a slit at the chest, and buttons in the middle.
