The Ngai are one of the few ethnic groups whose population has declined sharply, from 4,841 people (1999) to 1,035 people (2009). Although the population has increased, it still needs attention from the authorities. The Ngai mainly wear indigo-dyed cotton clothes, with almost no patterns. Men wear short shirts with an open chest, long pants and a belt. Women wear five-panel shirts with an open neckline, crossed over the right armpit.
